Solar Heating Rebates

Rebates are available for solar air and solar water heating equipment that qualify for the Made in Minnesota (MiM) rebate. The MiM solar heating rebate, for either solar air heating systems or solar water heating systems, is the lesser of 25% of the installed cost of a complete system or $2,500 for residences, 25% of the complete installed cost of solar heating system or a $5,000 maximum for multi-family dwellings, and 25% of the installed cost of a complete system or $25,000 maximum for commercial systems.  The MiM rebate is available on a first-come first-served basis while funds remain available. Only customers of Xcel Energy, Minnesota Power, Ottertail Power, and Alliant Energy are eligible for this MiM rebate.

Solar Electric Rebates

Rebates are available to customers of Brainerd Public Utilities at $2/watt for solar electric systems ($4,000 maximum); for more information: click here.

MiM solar electric system rebates will be accepted starting January 1, 2015 until February 28, 2015.  Details of these MiM rebates are available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Resources, website – click here

Tax Incentives

Solar equipment is eligible for the 30% Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit; more information is available here.  

The 30% Business Energy Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is available to businesses installing solar equipment; more information is available here. In addition, businesses may be able to use Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) depreciation, and solar equipment may be depreciated over 5 years under MACRS depreciation; more information on MACRS depreciation is available here.
